Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, prepare the frankfurters according to package directions.
Place the franks into the hot dog buns and dress with French onion dip, caramelized onions and gruyere cheese.
If needed, broil the prepared franks for 2-3 minutes until the cheese has melted.
